ABOUT JOHN CHALMERS DOANE
John Chalmers Doane was born in Truro, Nova Scotia on November 3, 1938. He graduated in 1961 from the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College and then earned his Bachelor of Education in Music at Boston University (1967) where he majored in trombone and minored in string methods. As supervisor of music for the Halifax School Board (1967-84), Chalmers Doane changed school music programs dramatically by using the ukulele as an inexpensive and practical teaching instrument. This approach became the basis of a country-wide program. As well as ensuring school-based instrumental and choral opportunities for every student, the music department boasted a broad range of music groups and ensembles. More recently, Doane was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts by Saint Mary’s University (2003); invested as a member of the Order of Canada (2005); honored by The Learning Partnership as a champion of public education (2008); and received the Order of Nova Scotia (2010).
